REGARDING the letter from DB of Kenton on Thursday, January 24.

I live in Mountfield Gardens, Kenton, and can I just say that we do have street wardens, we have had them for over two years and I am on first-name speaking terms with them. They are certainly a presence on the area that I live and I don't know what DB of Kenton is talking about. EMW, Kenton.

ABOUT the little boy who was excluded from school, my heart goes out to Carol Hope and her grandson Josh, who has been excluded from school for his poor behaviour due to him having ADHD.

The sad fact is that teachers are not equipped to deal with such children. The Government encourages parents to send their children with these conditions to mainstream school, the problem is that these children do not have good social skills.

No professionals are placed in schools to manage them or to teach them coping mechanisms. As far as I know there is no part in teachers' training that covers a) either how to spot characteristics of ADHD/autism or b) how to deal with it.

It has been my family's experience that teachers have treated the child as a naughty child or that the child behaves irrationally due to bad parenting skills.

Therefore the manner in which the child is dealt with only exacerbates the problem because the child becomes confused.

It is frustrating that in this day and age and with all the exposure these conditions have that schools do not treat these children with the empathy they so deserve. …
