LESS than a year after buying a multi-million-pound envelope business employing 275 people, the new owners say they are on track to develop their brand and will shortly begin a pounds 300,000 factory facelift.

Russell Croisdale, managing director of Encore Washington, says the investment will help in its ambition to give its European competitors a run for their money.

The business, on Hertburn Industrial Estate, makes 2.5 billion envelopes a year - equivalent to 10% of all annual deliveries made by the Royal Mail.

Mr Croisdale and his two partners bought the business early last year from its founders Dave McGuire and husband and wife team Tony and Jane Gill.

Its customers include BT, Lloyds TSB, Barclays, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Inland Revenue and Employment Serv ice.

He said: "The first year since the MBO has been a year of consolidation.

"We want to run a good company that gives all our workers a sense of belonging and maintains its position as the best in the business. …
