Remembering Fun with the Boys Brigade; Our Story Sparks Memories for Former Member Down Under

MEMORIES came flooding back to a Geordie expat thanks to the Chronicle.

Last month we put the spotlight on Wrekenton Boys Brigade in Gateshead, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month.

The story was read by former member Tom Coates, who now lives in Australia. Tom, 57, who has been in Perth for 20 years, was sent the story by his mother, who lives in Gateshead.

He said: "I have some fond memories of the Boys Brigade back in the '60s and particularly remember when we travelled around England playing football in different rounds of the BB Cup and also getting lost in Kielder Forest with three of the lads on a Duke of Edinburgh Award."

Tom has worked in the newspaper industry for the last 26 years. He worked for the Sunday Times and his wife Anne worked in the insurance industry before they emigrated to New Zealand in the 1970s.

After briefly returning to England, they returned to Australia, first living in Melbourne for seven years and then on to Perth. …
