TOP designers from the region yesterday lent their expertise to help Gateshead plan its new town centre.

Architects, planners and property specialists all attended the recently-restored Old Town Hall to exchange ideas on the regeneration project.

Among those attending was Red or Dead label founder Wayne Hemingway, one of the driving forces behind the Staiths South Bank housing development in Gateshead.

Coun Mick Henry, leader of Gateshead Council, said: "With its developments on Gateshead Quays and at the International Stadium, Gateshead has set a very high standard and achieved a reputation for high quality, leading edge design. We are determined to tackle the town centre regeneration in the same spirit.

"We have been working for a number of years to find a way forward and have consulted local people and carried out various studies to identify problems and to gather ideas.

"That's what today's summit is about - ideas. Our delegates bring a wide range of expertise and all are recognised experts in their own field. …
