AMERICA'S plans to prosecute six Guantanamo Bay prisoners over the 9/11terror attacks could turn into a "show trial", the UN's anti-torture chiefwarned today.

Manfred Nowak, the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on Torture, said that theproposals for a military tribunal risked breaching the basic standards ofjustice.

Human rights groups also pointed out that the CIA had admitted using"water-boarding"simulated drowning to interrogate one of the men, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

The Pentagon said last night that it planned to use a military court with amilitary jury for the first time to try "civilians" it believes mastermindedthe attacks on 11 September 2001.

But Mr Nowak told the BBC: "If there's so much evidence, why should they stillbe brought before a military commission which is lacking basic standards of afair trial? It might become a show trial." Amnesty International is expected tomount a legal challenge to the tribunal, which will be overseen by a panel of12 military officers, after the US said it may seek the death penalty.

The trial will be held at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in a US enclave inCuba, where 276 terror suspects are being held. The six men are the firstinmates to face a trial. …
