WITH regard to Duncan Gray's letter Blockbuster Boosts Coffers?

(7.2.08), Atonement offered this borough a priceless opportunity to star on the national stage at no cost to the local taxpayer.

The council received a piece of public art as a thank you, but the real benefits were to the people of Redcar and our borough, and also the wider Tees Valley area.

Many of our local people were employed by the film company - some as extras on the set, others in less glamorous but equally important roles ranging from working on the set to hairdressing.

Our hotels and B&Bs were full to capacity as demand spilled over into neighbouring towns.

Our catering businesses benefited from an estimated 70,000 visitors during the week of filming. And what price can you put on the fantastic "feelgood" atmosphere that it generated?

The regional premiere last September showed just how much people had enjoyed the experience when the seafront was jam-packed again with people wanting to see Joe Wright and be part of the celebration. …
