Football: Sing-Song Helps Lift Spirits on Cats Trip

NEW boy Andy Reid has already made a big impact at Sunderland following his arrival from Charlton on transfer deadline day - but it has been as much to do with his voice as it has with his ability with his feet.

Reid already has one assist to his name after he came on as a second-half substitute and set up fellow Irishman Daryl Murphy for the Black Cats' second goal in the win over Wigan Athletic last weekend, but he has also impressed his new team-mates during a team-bonding exercise in the Lake District.

Roy Keane has been a big fan of organising activities away from football to help build a good team spirit within the camp and he revealed how his former Republic of Ireland team-mate Reid had fitted straight into the group after he led a spontaneous night of sing-alongs with his guitar at the team's hotel this week.

He said: "We've got one or two new signings and it's nice for them to go away and get to know people better, away from the training ground. They all seem to have enjoyed it, they have come back refreshed. I've heard Reidy play before so I know how good he is. It's always nice to know that one of your players can organise a sing-song.

"They had a bit of a sing in the hotel bar which I don't mind, you have got to let off a bit of steam sometimes. It was probably best that I kept away for one or two days.

"I've had some good feedback.

We've been on a few excursions where it has been physically hard work but this time it was more of a case of nice and easy."

With a lengthy injury list still troubling him, Keane has been determined to take things easy during the team's break from competitive action this week.

And with that in mind, the former Manchester United skipper believes Sunderland's early exit from the FA Cup could be a good thing when considered in the grand scheme of their objectives this season. …
