LUCA IRVINE took full advantage of an 80- second start to win the opening event of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture at Wrekenton .

Competing in the under-13 race, the Sunderland Harrier led throughout and came home 22 seconds clear of the chasing pack. Morpeth's Adam Harrington was again being the pick, the North Eastern gold medalist closing in for a superb second place.

Harrington, with the fastest time of the day, led Morpeth to team victory ahead of Sunderland and Blyth.

In the under-15 event, Gateshead's Lewis Hogg led the field home with Jarrow and Hebburn's Marc Newby the pick of 1:20 handicappers after working his way through to sixth position.

The Wearsiders were celebrating again when Nathan Reed won the under-17 contest. with Tynedale's Tristan Venus posting the fastest time after crossing the line in second place from the fast pack.

It was another Sunderland victory in the under-13 girls' race when Charmaine Porter came out of the fast pack to win by nine seconds from Birtley's Sophie Forster. …
