Watchdog to Probe Police over Death

A POLICE watchdog is investigating a complaint that officers did not look closely enough for a father-of-three who was found dead in a stream three weeks ago.

Three youths alerted by his whimpering Jack Russell dog found the body of Robert Haigh, 41, in Woodham Burn, Newton Ayc-liffe, County Durham, at approximately 7:25pm on Thursday, January 31. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

But the Independent Police Complaints Commission announced yesterday that it was investigating the response by officers to a call from a concerned woman less than 90 minutes before Mr Haigh's body was found.

An IPCC spokesman said: "At approximately 6.05pm that day Durham Constabulary received a call from a member of the public who was concerned about the welfare of a man she had seen at Woodham Burn.

"The caller believed the man was drunk, unsteady on his feet and appeared to have sustained a head injury as a result of a collision with a lamppost. …
