NEW MARSKE stepped up their push for a trophy double as they clawed past Ashbrooke Belford House into the semi-final of the Wearside League Cup.

But the all conquering table-toppers - who remain unbeaten in the league - needed extra-time to seal a close-fought 2-1 win away at the league new boys to make progress.

New Marske went ahead against the Wearside outfit in the second half as Sam Garvie pounced in the box but Ashbrooke earned the extra half-hour as Bulmer got a late leveller.

But the Teessiders stepped up a gear in the added period and after a spell of pressure they won a penalty and Nicky Ward stepped up to drill it home.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, title challengers Whitehaven battered their way through with a 7-3 home defeat of Jarrow.

But WOLVISTON were left frustrated as they had their long trip to Windscale called off for the fourth time.

The silverware scheduling saga goes back to early December and has been postponed because of water-logging, ice and snow. …
