NEWCASTLE United reserve-team coach Adam Sadler today looked for the positives after tasting his first second-string defeat in four games at Wigan last night.

Sadler was without his in-form striker Andy Carroll and Kazenga LuaLua, with the pair not risked due to possible first-team involvement.

United fielded a young side at Robin Park, but the Latics, watched by Steve Bruce, used the reserve-team run out to give seven first-teamers a sniff of action on a chilly night in Lancashire.

Wigan opened the scoring on 17 minutes when Julius Agahowa's angled drive beat Fraser Forster.

Nine minutes into the second half an unfortunate mix-up between Callum Morris and Forster resulted in the young right-back poking it past his own keeper.

Sadler said today: "Wigan were difficult opponents both physically and technically, but our lads continued to show great attitude and work ethic throughout the game.

"We created three good chances in each half and, on another day, we could've got a result. …
