It's Our Oscar Too! Atonement Choir Basking in Glory

OSCAR recognition has been bestowed on a Teesside college choir after its songs featured in Atonement.

Bede's College Choir from Billingham were delighted to be credited on the soundtrack and on the film for their rendition of Oh God and Father of Mankind.

But an added bonus came when the film, which was nominated for seven Oscars, scooped one for the best musical score at the prestigious ceremony last week.

David Taylor owns Glasshouse Film and Television Productions based in Hartlepool, and is a media studies lecturer at the college.

He formed the 30-strong choir after he heard through the industry grapevine that a North-eastern sounding choir was needed.

He told the Gazette: "I knew the filmmakers were recruiting singers from the North-east so we put together the choir from students and staff.

"We were then sent to George Martin's recording studios in Hampstead - he recorded The Beatles - and we spent the day there. …
