IT IS excellent news that the owner of land surrounding Seaton Burn Welfare is working with North Tyneside Council on plans to invest pounds 5m to bring new sporting facilities to the village. They could be built on his land and the existing former colliery recreation ground.

His recent pre-application presentation for local people was well attended and the students in Seaton Burn College will have a chance separately to have their say on the plans before they are formally submitted to the council.

The present clubs, such as cricket, football and bowls, have a long, proud tradition and reputation in the area.

The work they all do and time they put in as volunteers plays a priceless role in every aspprtnfthp development of many of the young people of the area and links very positively with Seaton Burn College.

Their community approach has never been just about teaching anyone a particular sport.

In its heyday, when the pit was open, I remember whippet racing, quoits, a cycling club and more. …
