IN FRANCE the Yves Saint Laurent label has a romantic potency unlike anyother. Saint Laurent will always be revered as a genius, so it is testament tothe skill of designer Stefano Pilati that the Frenchnot to mention the British, the Americans and the Japanesehave taken to him so passionately.

Perhaps this is because, rather than referencing Saint Laurent's past, Pilatilooks to its future, drawing on the prolific archives but always creatingsomething resolutely modern.

His collection for autumn 2008 offered the freshest, cleanest vision at Parisfashion week so far. So many shows have models with poker straight hair andnatural, barely-there make-up that the geometric black wigs, their fringes likecurtains over the models' eyes, were a welcome point of difference.

The wigs marked out Pilati's intent not to follow but to lead when this seasonmany have played it safe.

Not all the clothes looked easy. The cocoon shape currently so prevalent haslong been pioneered by Pilati, and appeared again in heavy felted wool coats inblack, slate grey and brown. …
