COUNCIL chiefs will tonight be urged to back a motion slamming a health chief's "disgraceful" 150% pay rise.

As reported last week, Russell Hart, chairman of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded a pay hike by the trust's governors from pounds 20,000 to pounds 50,000 for a three-day week.

Health bosses claim the increase is justified because of new responsibilities now the organisation - which runs the University Hospital of North Tees and the University Hospital of Hartlepool - is a foundation trust. But the move sparked fury among Labour councillors and tonight Stockton Borough Council will be asked to support calls for an urgent review of the decision.

Stockton Labour Group has already written to Health Secretary Alan Johnson to voice its anger, which is compounded by health workers receiving a pay increase of just 2%.

Councillor Bob Gibson, leader of Stockton Labour Group, said: "We are asking the council to support that and to write to the minister to ask that this is stopped. …
