ENGLAND'S Nick Dougherty got off to a sensational start at the Maybank Malaysian Open today, firing a 10-under-par 62 to take the early lead at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

The 25-year-old, who started on the back nine at the 6,979-yard Ross Watson-designed layout near Kuala Lumpur, parred his first hole, the 10th, before getting into gear with three consecutive birdies to move to three under.

Dougherty described Kota Permai as a 'thinking man's course' yesterday and the 2005 Singapore Masters winner showed that he had done his homework as he closed his first nine with another three birdies to reach the turn at six under.

He would stretch his run of consecutive birdies to seven, picking up another four strokes at the start of his second nine, before finally cooling off with a par on the fifth.

The Englishman's quest to become the first player to shoot 59 on the main European Tour came unstuck as he missed makeable birdie putts on the last five holes of his round but his bogey-free 62 put him in charge of the EUR2m tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours. …
