PREDICTABLY, most MPs filed into the lobbies on Wednesday to scupper any hope of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty (aka the European Constitution).

This was done in defiance of the vast majority of United Kingdom citizens (at the last count, over 80%), who claim the right to decide this highly contentious matter.

Unfortunately, owing to pathetic coverage by the media, many people aren't even aware of the full implications of the treaty. For those of us unable to understand why there has been such reluctance to push the referendum question to the centre of public debate, the Today programme of March 5 proved enlightening.

According to the BBC's political correspondent, there was a "conspiracy of silence" by the leaders of political parties (their usually reliable stock of yes-men - oh, sorry, yes-persons - destabilised by rather too many plausible refuseniks) to avoid the media spotlight, by keeping the ratification process as "dull" as possible. …
