Funding Needed for Toots; Plea to Sponsor Festival

REGGAE legends Toots and the Maytals could be coming to Teesside to play a major festival.

The ska superstars are in discussions with organisers of WorldFest '08 to take place in May.

No programme has yet been fixed, but talks are taking place with Toots and the Maytals, as well as West African reggae star Alpha Blondy

But organisers still need to secure tens of thousands of pounds in funding.

Previously the main festival funder was the Northern Rock Foundation.

Rowena Sommerville, director of programmes for Tees Valley Arts, explained: "We were working out a three-year funding support plan with them when their crisis struck, and now there is no prospect of any further finance from them.

"We want to invite businesses and individuals in the region, and especially from the Tees Valley, to consider sponsoring the festival. Small sums could add up to a real difference."

The festival, due to take place from May 23 to 30, will celebrate diversity in the Tees Valley and showcase musical talent from across the globe. …
