NICK GANDY reckons injury-hit Blaydon will comfortably limp over the National Two finishing line to retain their highest-ever league status.

Despite missing 10 first-choice players until the end of the season, Blaydon need one more win to be safe - and after Saturday's two-point haul in defeat at Blackheath, the job is all but done.

Blaydon scored four tries for one bonus point, Adam Dehaty and Andy Fenby grabbing two each, and ended within seven points for the second.

With the final score 32-26, Blackheath only won out thanks to two penalties - but Gandy was not heartbroken in defeat, especially after last week's Manchester mauling.

The director of rugby - and emergency scrum-half - said: "I would not say we were unlucky to lose, but we did run them close and we deserved what we got.

"After last week it was vital we restored pride. Had a few things gone our way it might have been different, but that would have been very lucky for us if it had. …
