Five Abortions for Women Who 'Use It as Contraceptive'

MORE than 1,300 women have had at least five abortions, figures revealtoday.

Nearly 950 women undergoing a termination in England and Wales have had fourprevious terminations, almost 200 said they had already had five, 110 had hadsix before and 54 seven or more.

The figures for 2006, the latest available, show the number of women havingmore than one abortion rose from 58,740 in 2004 to 61,904. The revelationsparked concerns that abortion is being used as a form of contraception.

The figures were published in reply to a parliamentary question from Torybackbencher Mark Pritchard as MPs prepare to debate reforming the abortion lawsin the next few weeks.

Liberal Democrat MP Phil Willis, chairman of the Commons committee whichrejected lowering the time limit for abortions from 24 weeks, said it showed "amassive failure in the system".

He added: "The real challenge is what is the Government proposing to do to makesure that women presenting for multiple abortions are properly counselled andoffered sterilisation. …
