BMW Has Cornered the Chelsea Tractor Market

BMW has officially cornered the most lucrative sector of the new-car market by selling more luxury 4x4 models than any other company.

These are the models that are bought primarily for their image and for which punters are prepared to pay a hefty premium.

Although crammed with masses of go-anywhere equipment and unfeasibly large and powerful engines, they are rarely used for anything more ambitious than a trip to the shops or the school run.

Models such as the BMW X5 4.8i M at pounds 53,860 are capable of scorching from standstill to 60mph in just six and a half seconds and can travel at excess of 150mph.

They also have one of the highest CO2 figures at more than 285g/km and it is for this reason that they are referred to as Chelsea tractors, being large industrial-type vehicles that are most frequently seen parked on trendy high streets.

Rivals include the Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX and the Mercedes ML and GL models. …
