KEVIN KEEGAN has insisted that forgotten man Shola Ameobi still has a part to play in Newcastle United's relegation battle.

But the United boss has warned his 26-year-old striker that he must roll up his sleeves and put the effort in.

Ameobi has been down in the dumps lately, and it's easy to see why. He has not scored a goal this season and has only made one start for Keegan since the manager returned to St James's Park at the beginning of January - in the first game against Bolton Wanderers.

You have to go back to October 15, 2006, for Ameobi's last goal for United and that was a penalty in the 2-1 home defeat by Sam Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers.

And Ameobi's last goal from open play in the 1-1 draw with Everton a month earlier was lucky not to be chalked off when he was clearly offside.

But Ameobi's tally of 46 United goals is almost twice as many as the next best for the club in the current squad - the 24 bagged by Obafemi Martins. …
