IF WE believe, and Les May (Your Shout March 17) obviously does, that Britain has not faced a threat since the Nazis came to power in 1939, then we are seriously out of touch with reality, or simply content with our heads in the sand.

Evacuated in 1939 is a clear indication of his age, and his age is indicative of his outmoded view of what constitutes a threat. Does he really believe that if we are not sitting on the White Cliffs of Dover, with a pair of binoculars pointed skyward, we are not under threat?

Attacks upon our way of life are no longer mounted by legions of uniformed soldiers marching through the borders, or from 1,000 bomber raids. The IRA showed us that much. Fear, and the nurture of intolerance, are the present-day attack tactics.

Plant a few successful bombs and then all you have to do is say you are planting more, the fear that generates is the weapon of attack.

Plant the idea of superiority over other groups in the minds of susceptible and basically violent individuals and a second weapon is employed. …
