CRUEL Joanne Miller starved her dog to death by abandoning it in a tiny cupboard.

She left crossbreed Max to die a slow and painful death when she moved out of the property for more than a month.

Now the 40-year-old has been banned from keeping animals for life and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Miller even tried to get off the cruelty rap by blaming a former friend who she said was looking after the dog.

But when she realised the former friend was willing to give evidence against her in court, she admitted responsibility for Max's death.

RSPCA inspector Helen Bestwick said: "This is a shocking and heartbreaking case of cruelty. Max will undoubtedly have endured a slow and very painful death.

"It's unthinkable that anyone could abandon an animal like this without any thought or regard for its welfare.

"Thankfully, the sentence handed out in this case means no animal will suffer at the hands of Joanne Miller again. …
