Why Don't You Share and Share Alike? in Association with Environment Agency

Article excerpt

THE Environment Agency also promotes car-sharing to all their staff and has a specific schemes for their staff in the North-east.

With the cost of petrol continually rising and environmental issues at the forefront of a lot of people's minds, car sharing is a great option, decreasing the number of driver-only cars on the road and enabling two or more people to do one journey.

So what is the best way to find a lift?

There are quite a few online services available.

Liftshare.org www.liftshare.org/uk/comstart.asp was set up by Ali Cladburn in 1997. Drivers can search for people to give lifts to, while passengers can search for lifts to any destination in the UK. The cost of the travel is shared. The site now has more than 100,000 registered members so finding a lift will take you just a few minutes. It's free to join, and they state that a typical liftshare member saves themselves pounds 1,100 a year by sharing their daily journey.

The site also has a liftshare Groups feature where you can search and join either a private and public group for lifts in your area or for certain events. For example, there are groups set up for lifts to festivals and football matches.

There is also a facility to find walking and cycle buddies or even individuals looking to share a taxi.

Liftshare.org have a target of getting a 25% increase in car occupancy on National Liftshare Day, which would cut emissions by 20% for the day.

More online car share services are listed at the bottom of this article.
