Stanton starting pitcher Baker Chapman was good.

Wolfson's Mike Clevinger was better.

The junior pitched a complete game as the Wolfpack survived a stellar pitching duel to edge visiting Stanton 2-1 on Wednesday.

"Those were two very good high school pitchers out there tonight," Wolfson coach Scott Marabell said. "We were lucky to come out ahead."

Clevinger (4-1) stymied the Blue Devils throughout. He allowed just three hits, all singles, and walked one batter, striking out nine.

Wolfson improved to 13-1, while Stanton (11-4) dropped its third consecutive game.

"It was nice to have my control back," Clevinger said. "In my last outing, I walked five and hit a batter. Tonight, I had my fastball working so I let it fly. My slider was dropping off the table and was really nasty."

The teams were scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, before the Wolfpack took the lead. Trent Pettit provided the game-winning hit. …
