CHRIS Denning says: "Firstly, assess the area to ensure a safe spot to change your tyre .

"If you get a flat on the motorway, you must not attempt to change the flat yourself as this is too dangerous. Instead, call the emergency services.

"On quieter roads, pull over on to the side to stay clear of traffic and turn on the hazard lights. At night, be sure to use your hazard triangle to alert other drivers to your presence.

"Once you are in a safe position, collect your tyre changing equipment from the car boot and lay it out next to the car within easy reach.

"The first step should be to remove the wheel trim, if you have one, and then begin to loosen the wheel nuts with a wheel brace. Loosen the nuts one or two turns before you jack up the car but don't remove them entirely.

"The next step is to place the car jack on the correct point beneath the car, using your car manual to identify the safest point. …
