Car Share Lanes in the Pipeline; Transport Study Reveals Future of Region's Roads

CAR share lanes where lone drivers are banned could be introduced in Tyne & Wear.

The idea is one of several that will be explored to help tackle traffic congestion on the local roads network.

However, Newcastle Council leader John Shipley warned it would be virtually impossible to implement in the city centre.

As revealed in yesterday's Chronicle, congestion charging looks certain to be ruled out for at least five years.

A study group called People in Motion set up to look at tackling congestion in Tyne & Wear on behalf of the five local councils will now seek Government money to continue the work.

"We want to achieve a fully integrated transport strategy that meets all of our transport needs," said a spokesperson for People in Motion.

"This includes a very wide range of measures, such as improvements to park and ride services, integrated public transport services and effective approaches to managing car use, including charging. …
