I WONDER if anyone can identify my uncle, William Hall Common, and in particular his involvement with the military.

In 1901 my grandfather, Robert Henry Common, was a compositor on the Evening Chronicle or The Journal, I am not sure which. He lived at 81 Dilston Road, Elswick, Newcastle, and had five sons and three daughters.

The eldest son, Robert (my Uncle Bob) was to become an army officer in the First World War and was decorated with the St George's Cross by Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia.

I only mention this in case it "rings a bell" somewhere.

However, it is the younger brother, William H Common who remains a mystery.

We know he was born in 1885, was raised and educated in Newcastle and at the age of 16 became a boilermaker's apprentice.

On November 26, 1914, he died of tuberculosis at the Newcastle City Hospital for Contagious and Infectious Diseases at Walker.

Our only other clue is a family photograph showing William as a commissioned Army officer with some lapel insignia and sporting a naval officer's cap badge. …
