Swim Ace Has Mayor Than One Incentive

ANDREW MAYOR makes his bid for Beijing qualification tonight in the British Championships and Olympic Trials.

The City of Newcastle swimmer competes in the 100 metres butterfly heats in Sheffield knowing he has two chances of joining the Great Britain squad for this August's Games.

The 21-year-old Scot, who swam for Great Britain at the European Short Course Championships in December, is ranked fourth fastest in Britain in the event.

His coach Ian Oliver said: "Andrew will have to knock a second off his current best time to gain the FINA Olympic qualification mark.

"However, even if he misses this he could still make Beijing in the men's 4x 100 medley relay team by winning his race, so he has every incentive to do well."

Team-mate Chris Cook returns to the water after his record-breaking exploits in the 100 metres breaststroke event yesterday.

The 28-year-old South Tynesider, as first revealed in later editions of yesterday's Chronicle, smashed the Commonwealth Games record on his way to sealing his place in China. …
