Article excerpt

WEST HOUSE regular and England squad member Chris Micalef from Stockton won the Troutmasters fish-off - when he finally woke up.

He forgot to change his clock to British summertime, so arrived an hour late, but still caught 14 fish, mainly on size 16 Black Buzzers, to win.

It earned him his eighth consecutive final appearances, and he will fish at Grafham Water in May for national honours in the event run by Trout Fisherman magazine.

Richard Landsbury, the winner of the West House Winter Series was runner up with eight fish. Ernie Craster and James Stephenson caught six each to tie for third place.

Among non-match anglers to shine was John Parkinson of Thirsk, who caught a 14lb 6oz rainbow on a Bloodworm.

Peter Johnson of Stockton, on his first visit to the lakes, caught 12 fish all on small dry flies.

Top patterns: Bloodworm, Damsel, Cat's Whisker, Dawson's, Olive Zonker, Black or Olive Buzzers.

AT LOCKWOOD BECK, 17 anglers fished the Airflo match in tough conditions of strong winds, sunshine, then heavy rain.

Only three blanked, the other 14 catching 59 fish between them. Andrew Grabham won with 10 fish; Trevor Wadds was second with eight and John McGarrell third with seven.

All three have qualified for the final at Elinor on October 11.

There are still places left for the three-man team Airflo event on sat 26th April. Ring the fishery on 01287 660501 or visit www.lockwoodfishery.co.uk As the spring weather arrives trout are rising all over the reservoir at times, and dries and nymphs will start taking more fish.

Rainbows to double figures have been caught, Paul Bowker leading the way with a rainbow of 10lb 2oz, while several anglers have caught fish approaching that weight.

Steve Fish was among them with a rainbow of 9lb 5oz. Les Jefferson caught rainbows of 9lb 3oz and 8lb 4oz.

Colin Green caught an overwintered brown of 7lb, which was in top condition.

Olive Murray returned a lovely 6lb brown caught from a boat on a Pheasant Tail Nymph. …
