Engleby by Sebastian Faulks (Vintage, [pounds sterling]7.99)

SEBASTIAN Faulks's latest is a big departure from lady spies or elderlyscientists. It's an alternative version of Faulks's own life had things goneless swimmingly.

Mike Engleby was born in the same town, in the same year as Faulks. He went tothe same school and university, then on to similar sorts of jobs. But ratherthan creating Bad Sebastian, Faulks has given us Sad Sebastiana drug-taking alcoholic and possibly a killer, yes, but also a prog rock boreand a snooty, friendless loser.

As such, he's not the most thrilling chap to follow over the novel's 30-yearcourse, but this is still readable, and perks up particularly in the middle,when the girl Mike has a crush on goes missing..
