Zimbabwe Court Rules in Favour of Tsvangirai; Buoyed: Morgan Tsvangirai

ZIMBABWE'S high court has ruled that it is authorised to compel theelectoral commission to release results of the presidential election butpostponed whether it will do so until today.

The ruling cheered Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of opposition party the Movementfor Democratic Change, who claims the government's refusal to release theresults is evidence he has won the 29 March election.

Five election officials have been arrested accused of undercounting votes forthe president Robert Mugabe.

Mr Tsvangirai hit out at Zanu-PF's decision to call for a recount beforereleasing the results of the first count, and said talk of a run-off waspremature.

Yesterday he travelled to South Africa for talks with senior officials,although president Thabo Mbeki, a supporter of Mr Mugabe, did not attend.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has joined those urging Mr Mugabe to releasethe results.

Further hopeful signs for Mr Tsvangirai have come from the unexpected quarterof Zimbabwe's governmentcontrolled newspaper, The Herald.

It reported that Mr Tsvangirai has made fiscal stability his priority, planningto enlist the help of the German central bank to put the Reserve Bank ofZimbabwe on an even keel. …
