HIS ostentatious display of wealth was his final undoing.

With his flash home, fleet of luxury cars and exotic holidays, Mark Cadogan seemed a modern-day success.

But with no visible means of income, the question was how?

His big mouth and a lengthy surveillance operation provided the answer - Cadogan was a big-time drug dealer, and today he was starting a 10-year stretch behind bars, while the authorities seized his assets.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how he drove only the flashiest cars, from a pounds 50,000 BMW convertible to a pounds 130,000 Aston Martin.

And the 45-year-old also owned homes in Spain, Holland and the former Soviet Republic of Armenia - where he had resident's status.

He bought a string of investment properties closer to home across the North East as the drugs cash rolled in.

And boasting he was a millionaire, Cadogan and his partner Melanie McElderry enjoyed 26 foreign holidays in just 19 months, the court heard.

But an 18-month police surveillance operation, codenamed Lazer, brought him down.

"Cadogan was a big-time dealer in cannabis and had he not been arrested by police and his assets seized he would have been a rich man," said Christopher Knox, prosecuting.

"The case concerns his business, for that is how he ran it.

"He and McElderry enjoyed a very lavish lifestyle from 2003 to 2007.

"They had a minimum of pounds 100,000 a year between them tax free because, of course, they did not join the tax system."

But while Cadogan, from Cotter Riggs, Chapel House, Newcastle, pulled the strings, police were closing in.

He had been stopped flying into Los Angeles carrying EUR32,000, while a Scottish dealer who allegedly owed him more than pounds 100,000 was found shot dead in a ditch, although Cadogan had nothing to do with that assassination. …
