A STOCKTON man who was conned out of nearly pounds 800 by an internet scam has warned of the dangers of web shopping.

The man, who did not wish to be named, contacted Cleveland Police after paying pounds 735 for a Sony TV which was never delivered.

After spotting what looked like a bargain on Amazon, he responded to the seller, who sent a false e-mail bearing the site logo to say the seller could not accept payment via the credit card he had set up with Amazon. Instead, he sent a Moneygram for pounds 735 at Yarm Post Office, and was also charged an additional pounds 40 for the service.

But since replying to the e-mail early in March confirming details of the transaction, he has heard no more.

He said: "I saw the advert for an ex-demo Sony TV, so I e-mailed the seller to ask if it was like new.

"I got an e-mail back to say it was and it also had a warranty, and I was asked to send my name and address so the seller could contact Amazon and proceed with the sale. …
