'MUSICAL CHAIRS'; Plan to Solve Downtown Space Crunch Gets Hearing

FERNANDINA BEACH - The City Commission will have a workshop at 6 p.m. today at the Peck Center, 516 S. 10th St., to discuss the so-called "musical chairs" proposal to resolve space crunches at City Hall and the Fernandina library while preserving the historic downtown Post Office and the First Baptist Church.

The proposal: Fernandina Beach Friends of the Library commissioned a study in 2007 looking at the feasibility of housing city and library functions among City Hall on Ash Street, the library on North Fourth Street, the Post Office on Centre Street and the First Baptist complex at Alachua and North Fifth streets, which includes the church and two annexes.

Findings: While the study released in July found the Post Office could also serve as City Hall while still housing postal operations, none of the existing structures would meet library needs, meaning a new library would have to be built at either the site of the church annexes or where City Hall now stands. …
