FORMER NEWS of the World editor Phil Hall has taken on board some toughclients since he crossed to the dark side of PR from newspapers. Hall promotedHeather Mills during her bitter divorce with Sir Paul McCartney and even hasembattled Formula One boss Max Mosley on his books. But is he set to take onhis hardest sell yet ... Gordon Brown? There is speculation today Brown hasapproached Hall to bring a lighter touch to the Downing Street PR machine andprovide a counterbalance to the Prime Minister's mercurial spin doctor DamienMcBride.

Given that David Cameron hired former NotW editor Andy Coulson to run his PR,the move may not appear so outlandish but some might think it smacks ofdesperation.

Last night Brown appeared in a prerecorded clip on the US talent show AmericanIdol and earlier this week he invited George Clooney to Downing Street. Only ayear ago he said: " I do not believe politics is about celebrity." No doubtdire poll ratings have forced him to think again. …
