MICHAEL Barker volunteered as a development manager in Uganda for a year. He says it changed his perspective on life and he hopes he helped organisations financially.

The 31-year-old, who works for Deloitte, says: "It was a great experience but it was strange coming back. I had been thinking about it for some time. I wanted to get some perspective back. And I think that did happen.

"I really enjoyed my job but it was not changing the world.

"I wanted to see if I could make a small difference. I was helping organisations with strategic planning and financial systems." Michael would love to volunteer again one day, but says he has to earn a living for now. He still hears from some of the organisations he helped including an orphanage that he worked with in Uganda. He says: "I am still in contact with some of the organisations. They will ask for advice on how to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently. The orphanage struggled separating what they should be doing such as education and health care and other roles. …
