Lady Eagles' Lacrosse Season Ends at 14-3

In only its second year of existence, the Fleming Island girls lacrosse team went 14-3, including a 14-game winning streak and an undefeated district record that led to regular-season and district-tournament championships.

While enjoying their successes, coach Don Colangelo and the Lady Eagles always suspected life outside District 1 was not so rosy. Tuesday night, the District 3 champion Lady Lions of Oviedo helped confirm those suspicions as they ended Fleming Island's season, 22-13.

"We hung in there for a while," Colangelo said. "We knew we were the underdog, but I think we had a good outing."

Speedy Oviedo flexed its muscle from the start, scoring the first four goals in less than 4 minutes as it built an 8-1 lead with 16 minutes to play in the first half.

"We hadn't played a team that quick all season," Colangelo said. "They just ran right through our defense and there's no way a goalie can defend that."

Despite the early onslaught, Colangelo said he was proud of the way his team handled the adversity and climbed back into contention. …
