Did anyone else see the irony? The headline said "$60 million man" right beside "State cash for public schools dwindles." Here we are watching the country slide into recession, the art, music and physical-education programs are being cut from schools, and yet we read that there are still contracts being negotiated like the one for David Garrard. I can only hope with these millions being spent, someone will eventually have that light-bulb moment and start to realize such imbalances.

WHERE'S THE LOTTERY MONEY?

Why are the schools having so many financial problems in cutting back on benefits for the students? Wasn't the lottery supposed to create money to be used by the schools? Maybe an audit ... is in order.

THANKS FOR HELPING LOST DOG

I would like to thank the two gentlemen from 1-800-GOT-JUNK and the young lady from the pickup truck and all the motorists who slowed to help catch a loose dog Monday on St. Johns Avenue in Avondale. The dog did not belong to any of us, and it was very scared. It was really nice to see everyone come together ... The owner did show up and was very grateful. It made my day.

NAACP TAKES ON UNJUST CAUSE

As a black man, I am appalled that the NAACP would want these Waycross, Ga., children reinstated in school after they plotted to kill their teacher, whether it was executed or not. ... Sometimes when you make decisions, you have to suffer those consequences. The NAACP is supposed to take up black causes that are just. This call is unjust.

SOLDIERS DIED FOR SOMETHING

I just heard on TV and I'd seen it in the paper many times about how many troops have been killed in Iraq. It's now over 4,000. At the same time, how many have been killed by drunken drivers? How many have been murdered? At least these men and women were defending our country. …
