IN a bid to bring loch-style boat fishing back to Sweethope Loughs there is to be a massive stocking of brown trout - in addition to the regular stocking of rainbows - in the Top Lough to be fished on a catch-and-release basis only.

A break in the weather last Sunday saw good hatches at Sweethope Loughs where the Border Bears from Berwickshire fished their first boat competition of the season with 15 anglers netting 145 fish on Viva, Cat's Whisker, Kate McLaren and Buzzers.

G Sanderson from Cramlington had 12 fish, all on Dawson's Olive, off the Top Lough in an evening session. Peter Smith and Gavin Breeze from Morpeth, fishing Diawl Bachs, weighed in six fish for 19lb 8oz.

Sporting ticket angler S Younger safely returned 12 fish that fell to Diawl Bachs and Black and Peacock Spiders, Vera and Ian Purvis from Alnwick had 11 fish off the Top Lough on Black Fritz, Geoff Lambert and son had 12 fish for 34lb 8oz, Ian safely returning a cracking 6lb brown trout, and A & P Jones fishing Bloodworms on the Bottom Lough safely returned 14 fish in their evening session using Bloodworm.

It was another excellent week's fishing at Hadrian fishery. K Best of Wingate, County Durham, using Hare's Ear and Consett Budgie, had two brown trout for 16lb, J Robson of Newcastle using an Orange Fritz, had three rainbows for 11lb 7oz while B Cuddingham of Whitley Bay took five rainbows for 14lb on a Black Fritz.

Steve Fish from Houghton-le-Spring was a double at Sharpley Springs this week, winning the Troutmasters fish-off and landing the pounds 500 tagged fish prize. Steve also found himself among the double-figure fish with three between 10lb and 14lb.

Fred Maddison, also from Houghton and third in the fish-off, netted the pounds 1,000 tagged fish while second-placed John Maguire brought a cracking fish of 10lb 6oz to the net. …
