$1.2 Million in Damages Results from Grease Fire at Kings Tree Apartments

An accidental grease fire caused a blaze at 6:30 p.m. April 10, resulting in about $1.2 million in damages to Kings Tree Apartments on Kingsley Avenue, according to the state fire marshal.

Eight apartments in building 7 and two in building 6 were affected. The Red Cross provided assistance for families that were displaced.

"It's a very unfortunate incident; luckily no one was seriously hurt," said Robby Stephens, supervisor of the state fire marshal's office in Jacksonville, who said the state ruled the fire accidental and said no one will be charged.

Stephens said Tangelia Smith, a 43-year-old female resident, was cooking with grease when it caught fire. She used a fire extinguisher, but that blew the fire all over the apartment, said Stephens, who said baking soda was needed in this case. Smith eventually jumped out her two-story window to escape the flames. She was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, then transported to Shands Gainesville where she is being treated for burns and broken bones, Stephens said, adding that he expects a full recovery. …
