MARTIN Johnson has vowed he will give it his "absolute best" on a highprofile return to the sport as England team manager, writes ANDREW BALDOCK.

Johnson insists a job that could earn him about pounds 900,000 over the threeand-a-half years of his contract is not about ego or money.

England's 2003 World Cup-winning captain gave his first Twickenham Press conference yesterday since his appointment. While many England supporters will expect immediate success, the 38-year-old said: "I have got my eyes open to this. I am not thinking I am going to turn up and it will work straight away.

"It is about creating an environment and getting the right people in around the team. In the last year or so, I have been thinking about getting back into the game.

"I always knew when I retired from playing that somewhere, some day, somehow, I would get back in the game. Sometimes, opportunities come up in your life. They did when I was a player - I was very lucky in lots of ways - and I didn't ever want to be sat down in the future, thinking 'if only'. …
