A TEESSIDE couple who met on the dance floor have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Robert and Ivy Peacock were first introduced in a dance hall in the 1930s and married on April 18, 1938, a year before the outbreak of World War Two.

Robert, a draughtsman and joiner by trade, served in India during the war but kept in contact with Ivy by letter.

The couple, who both come from Darlington but now live in Middlesbrough, celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary with a cake, wine, flowers, friends and family.

Robert, 97, lives in Ormesby while Ivy, 91, is in Tollesby Hall Nursing Home, off Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough, having suffered a stroke a year ago.

However, Robert visits his wife every day without fail.

He said: "We are very, very close and love each other very, very dearly".

"The anniversary was a wonderful day."

Robert met Ivy after her brother introduced him to dancing classes.

The couple, who married at St Cuthbert's Church in Darlington, moved to London for a time so Robert could find work but moved back to the North-east on the day war was declared. …
