SEX SYMBOL SHOWDOWN; WINNER: THE BLONDE OVER BOND Marilyn Monroe Beats out Sean Connery
Byline: TOM SZAROLETA
It should have been obvious from the start: In the long history of Hollywood sex symbols, no one can compete with the legend of Marilyn Monroe.
Thousands have tried, and many have created lasting legacies of their own. But there's only one Marilyn, and Times-Union readers and jacksonville.com viewers confirmed that by selecting her the winner of our Sex Symbol Showdown. Over the course of the tournament, she defeated Dolly Parton, Mae West, Rita Hayworth, Sophia Loren, Halle Berry and Sean Connery, collecting 5,933 votes (far and away the highest total in the tournament) to her opponents' 1,869.
Marilyn was a great sex symbol, and she knew it. As she once told an interviewer, "A sex symbol becomes a thing, I just hate being a thing. But if I'm going to be a symbol of something I'd rather have it sex than some other things we've got symbols of."
Well said, Miss Monroe, well said.
