CONGESTION near a primary school has resulted in the partial loss of the pupils' playground - to a mixed response from parents.

Egglescliffe Primary School submitted a planning application to extend the car park in January following calls from parents, residents and staff for more on-site parking.

It was accepted by Stockton Council's planning department and work was carried out over the Easter holidays.

One parent contacted the Gazette to express her anger that the children had lost part of the playground as a result.

But others believe it has eased traffic problems along Butts Lane, improving the safety of those coming to and from school.

One parent told the Gazette: "There was a lot of congestion because there was not enough parking at the school and teachers were having to park along the road.

"There is a still a big playground so I think it's a good thing."

Another said: "The traffic was bad but it is much better since they provided more parking. …
