BIRTHDAY girl Hilda Shepherd has 100 reasons to celebrate.

The Norton pensioner has been enjoying the company of friends and family as she marked her centenary birthday.

Born and raised in Stockton, the devout Catholic had Holy Communion at home yesterday before heading out for high tea at a secret location.

Of her special day, Hilda said: "I got a lovely telegram from the Queen. I have had lots of flowers.

"I have had a lovely time the entire weekend with lots of company. It has been very nice."

Hilda's two sons, Joseph, 78, who travelled up from his home in London, and David, 69, who lives in Hartburn, joined the celebration. Hilda also has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"I have seen some big changes," she admitted. "I lived through the First World War and the second.

"I remember the air raids and running into the shelters, coming out and having a cup of tea and then having to run back in. …
