I WOULD like to respond to a letter regarding the proposed development of the railway marshalling yards between Middlesbrough and Stockton (Why Not Go For Best Of British On Brownfield? 23.04.08).

This is a rare opportunity to bring together the two major conurbations and one which needs to be handled with the utmost care if it is to be successful and sustainable.

I would concur with Mr Wellthorpe that we should be making the most of the substantial architectural skills available in local practices.

However, referring to the proposed "German and Scandinavian designs", I'm sure the developers of the Thornaby site do not advocate a Germanic approach to the appearance, simply that we have a lot to learn from their standards in energy performance and building techniques.

It is a fact that our continental neighbours are way ahead of us in designing for energy conservation.

The "Passive House" standard, for instance, developed in Germany, reveals how far behind we are in the advancement of energy efficient buildings. …
