Police Seek Man They Say Shot at Own Wife and Kids; the Woman, Who Is Recovering, Was the Only Person Injured

Article excerpt

Jacksonville Beach police are still looking for a man they say fired into a car with his children and wife, striking her at least twice during an argument Sunday.

Levert J. Stewart got out of a vehicle in which his wife, his three children and his brother were sitting after the car pulled to a stop on First Avenue South so the children could visit the beach, said Sgt. Thomas Bingham.

Stewart and his wife were arguing and that's when multiple shots were fired at the car and Stewart fled, Bingham said. No one else was injured and Lavonta Stewart is recovering. The children are 2, 4 and 5 years old.

Stewart is considered armed and dangerous, Bingham said. The 26-year-old had temporary injunction for protection orders against him and several arrests for drugs, battery and resisting officers. He is now wanted on charges of attempted homicide, child endangerment, aggravated domestic battery and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

The Police Department describes him as a black male, 5-foot-11 to 6-foot, 200 pounds with loose-fitting braids in his hair. He has several tattoos including on each side of his neck.

Anyone with information on Stewart's location can contact Jacksonville Beach police at (904) 270-1667.

MAN GETS 6 1/2 YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD PORN

A Jacksonville man was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison Tuesday for having hundreds of images and nearly 600 videos depicting child pornography.

Benjamin Paul Strieter, a 26-year-old who had later moved to Ohio, also has a 20-year term of supervised release and must register as a sex offender. Senior U.S. District Judge John H. Moore II sentenced him Tuesday in Jacksonville.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents identified Strieter when he bought memberships in a child pornography Web site, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Agents and detectives from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office contacted him at his home in July where they seized several computers and disks full of child porn. He pleaded guilty in January.
