Yes, we know sewer pipes are being installed along Julington Creek Road.

And Mandarin motorists are also putting up with a road-widening project up and down Old St. Augustine Road from Losco Road down almost to Interstate 95.

Now two other agencies have given Mandarin drivers other road projects to drive around. The good news is that one project at the north end of Mandarin should be done very soon, while the result of the other, along Hartley and Hood roads, is better water pressure.

The project closest to completion is at the intersection of Baymeadows Road and San Jose Boulevard. The joint JTA/Florida Department of Transportation project has redesigned the interchange, with newly reshaped medians and turn lanes as well as new overhead masts with traffic signals. FDOT spokesman Mike Goldman said the $1 million project should be done by mid-May to "make traffic get through the intersection better and reduce the backups in both directions."

The longer project is along Hartley Road between San Jose Boulevard and Old St. Augustine Road, as well as a short stretch of Hood Road to the east. This $4 million JEA water line improvement will provide "additional capacity to high-demand areas and prevent potential low-pressure problems to new development areas" off Greenland Road, Old St. Augustine Road in Bayard and further south into St. Johns County, according to a JEA news release.

The visible evidence of the project, begun in January, are the stacks of 24-inch high-density polyethylene piping stacked along the roads as crews use directional boring to slide them underground, versus the old way of digging ditches all along the roadside.

"We had to do it because the city will be doing some road work in the same area, so we had to get it done before they did," said JEA spokeswoman Gerri Boyce. …
